EDITORS COMMENTS
In Norse mythology, Thiassi, also known as Thiazzi or Thrym, was a giant and the ruler of the mountainous region of Jotunheim. Known for his cunning and mischievous nature, Thiassi once devised a plan to steal meat from the gods. According to the myth, Thiassi disguised himself as Freyja, the goddess of love and fertility, and flew to Asgard in the form of an eagle. Once there, he landed near the god Odin, who was cooking a large feast for the gods. Thiassi, as Freyja, approached Odin and asked if she could have a share of the meat. Odin, not suspecting anything amiss, granted her request. Thiassi then transformed back into his giant form and carried off a large portion of the meat, flying back to Jotunheim to share with his fellow giants. This illustration from The Olafur Brynjulfsson Edda, a 18th-century Icelandic manuscript, depicts Thiassi in disguise as an eagle, stealing meat from Odin. The manuscript contains material from both the Younger and Elder Eddas, two major sources of Norse mythology. The intricate details of the illustration show Thiassi's cunning transformation and his successful theft, highlighting the playful and mischievous nature of the giants in Norse mythology. The Olafur Brynjulfsson Edda is an important historical artifact, providing valuable insights into the mythology and cultural traditions of the Norse people. This illustration, in particular, showcases the rich storytelling and artistic traditions that have been passed down through generations. The myth of Thiassi and his eagle disguise continues to captivate audiences and inspire new interpretations of Norse mythology.
