EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a stunning Plaque from a Reliquary Shrine, dating back to around 1170. Crafted by the German School in the 12th century, this exquisite piece is made of gilded copper and adorned with champleve and cloisonne enamel. Measuring at just 2.7x6.05 cm, it is a testament to the intricate artistry of its time. The plaque holds significant historical value as it has been associated with some of Cologne's most revered reliquary shrines. Notably, it bears resemblance to the shrine of the Three Kings at Cologne Cathedral in its upper left section. Additionally, it shares similarities with the shrines dedicated to Saints Maurinus and Albinus located in Saint Panteleon Abbey Church. Currently housed in the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, USA, this relic was generously gifted by Rosamond Zverina. Its ornate design reflects patterns commonly found during the Romanesque period along the Rhine Valley.
