Gate of Tangier - flight of the population, 1844. Creator: Unknown

Gate of Tangier - flight of the population, 1844. Scene from the Franco-Moroccan War, showing...the flight of the inhabitants, by the gate Marshan from the citadel of Tangier, during its recent siege by the French. This celebrated spot, picturesque in itself, and magnificent in its relations - bearing, as it does, the treasury of the city, and being the seat of the local Government -became a point of great importance to the besiegers. It was severely handled, at least, in intention, but it happily escaped with little injury. During the bombardment vast numbers of the population escaped by this gate; and here might be seen an unoffending multitude flying beneath a shower of shells, and forming a sickening episode in the terrific spectacle of war. From " Illustrated London News", 1844, Vol V

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Gate of Tangier - flight of the population, 1844" takes us back to a significant moment in history during the Franco-Moroccan War. The scene depicts the desperate flight of the inhabitants through the gate Marshan from the citadel of Tangier, as it came under siege by French forces. This gate, with its picturesque charm and immense importance as the city's treasury and seat of local government, became a focal point for both defenders and attackers. Despite being targeted with intentions to inflict severe damage, this celebrated spot miraculously escaped major harm. However, what unfolded beneath its archway was truly heart-wrenching. As shells rained down upon them, an unoffending multitude sought refuge through this gateway. The image captures their vulnerability and fear as they flee amidst the chaos of war. Published in "Illustrated London News" in 1844, this engraving offers a glimpse into a dramatic episode that unfolded within North Africa's walled city. It showcases not only architectural features but also highlights elements such as religion (Islam) and culture prevalent in Morocco during that era. Preserved by Heritage Images today, this black-and-white photograph serves as a reminder of how conflict can disrupt lives and force innocent civilians to abandon their homes in search of safety. It stands testament to both human resilience and the devastating impact war has on communities caught up in its turmoil.
