EDITORS COMMENTS
Caption: "A Symbol of African-American Golfing Legacy - Ethel Funches' Beloved Golf Glove". This print showcases a treasured artifact from the late 20th century, belonging to trailblazing African-American golfer Ethel Funches. Crafted by Nancy Lopez Golf Inc. , this left leather golf glove bears witness to Funches' remarkable journey in the world of golf. The off-white glove, now wrinkled and discolored with age, exhibits signs of extensive use on its surface. Tiny air holes dot each finger, attesting to countless swings taken on sun-drenched fairways. A Velcro strap adorns the bottom for secure fastening during play. Embroidered atop the thread-made top are four black diagonal lines and the name 'Nancy Lopez, ' paying homage to another legendary figure in women's golf. The opening of the glove reveals tattered edges, loose strings, and yellow discoloration while offering glimpses of elastic pieces within. A meticulous zig-zag pattern made out of thread gracefully encircles the wrist opening. Preserved at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), this artifact symbolizes not only Funches' personal achievements but also represents an important chapter in African-American sports history. It serves as a testament to their resilience and determination in breaking barriers within a predominantly white sport. As we gaze upon this worn yet cherished item, it reminds us that every crease tells a story - one that celebrates diversity, cultural heritage, and triumph against adversity. "
