Leaf from a Book of Hours: Adoration of the Magi (recto) and Text with Illustrated Border (verso)
Leaf from a Book of Hours: Adoration of the Magi (recto) and Text with Illustrated Border (verso) (3 of 3 Excised Leaves), c. 1510. Characteristic of the artists hand, the bright orange-reds combine with deep blues, greens, and an abundance of gold wash in this leaf. He used fine parallel lines or crosshatching in gold to indicate the shading, highlights, and texture of draperies, suggesting some knowledge of printmaking, an art for which Rouen was also an important center. His figures have large, thickly outlined oval faces. This miniature also demonstrates the emerging fashion in both Rouen and Paris for highly involved, Italianate architectural frames: winged putti, swags, urns, garlands, scallop shells, pillasters, and masks. These elements could be assembled in different ways so that no two frames were identical. Rouen in the late 1400s and early 1500s was an established and important center for book production. Richly decorated library texts and books of hours, such as the present leaves, were made in Rouen for sale in the cours des libraires, next to the cathedral

EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant print captures a leaf from a Book of Hours, showcasing the exquisite artistry of the early 16th century. Created around 1510 in Rouen, this leaf is characterized by its artist's skilled hand and attention to detail. The use of bright orange-reds, deep blues, greens, and lavish gold washes brings an opulent richness to the composition. The artist employed fine parallel lines and crosshatching in gold to depict shading, highlights, and texture on the draperies. This technique suggests a familiarity with printmaking, which was also flourishing in Rouen during that time. The figures portrayed in this miniature have large oval faces outlined with thick strokes. Notably, this artwork showcases the emerging trend for elaborate Italianate architectural frames seen both in Rouen and Paris at that period. These frames feature winged putti (cherubs), swags (festoons), urns, garlands (ornamental wreaths), scallop shells, pillasters (rectangular columns), and masks. Each frame could be uniquely assembled using these elements. Rouen was renowned as an established center for book production during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Luxuriously adorned texts like these leaves were crafted specifically for sale at the cours des libraires near Rouen Cathedral. This stunning print allows us to appreciate not only the skillful craftsmanship but also provides insight into artistic trends prevalent during this era of Renaissance book production in France.
