Monochrome street scene, 1951. Creator: Shirley Markham
Monochrome street scene, 1951. Monochrome exercise. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This monochrome street scene, captured in 1951 by the talented artist Shirley Markham, takes us back to a time of simplicity and elegance. Markham's artistic journey began at the prestigious Central School of Art in London, where she studied Graphic Design and Illustration under the guidance of renowned writer and illustrator Mervyn Peake. Influenced by esteemed British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden, Markham developed her own unique style of drawing. Her travels to Italy further enriched her creative vision as she sketched classical buildings in Rome and immersed herself in the breathtaking Dolomite Mountains. After graduating from Central School, Markham embarked on a successful career as a graphic designer. She lent her artistic touch to book illustrations, comics' cartoons, menus, and programmes. However, societal expectations during that era compelled her to abandon her promising profession when she married in 1957. Middle-class women were often expected to prioritize their roles as homemakers and mothers over pursuing their passions. Regrettably overshadowed for years within the confines of a family attic, Markham's extraordinary portfolio now sees the light once again with its first-ever publication. This remarkable print serves not only as a testament to Markham's undeniable talent but also sheds light on the challenges faced by countless women artists who struggled against societal norms. Let this monochrome street scene transport you back in time while celebrating Shirley Markham's exceptional contribution to art history – an inspiring tale that deserves recognition beyond commercial use.
