The Nimrod Returns, c1908, (1909). Artist: George Marston

The Nimrod Returns, c1908, (1909). Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (1874-1922) made three expeditions to the Antarctic. During the second expedition, 1907-1909, he and three companions established a new record, Farthest South latitude at 88° S, only 97 geographical miles (112 statute miles, or 180 km) from the South Pole, the largest advance to the pole in exploration history. Members of his team also climbed Mount Erebus, the most active volcano in the Antarctic. Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII for these achievements. He died during his third and last oceanographic and sub-antarctic expedition, aged 47. Illustration after an original painting by George Marston (1882-1940) the expedition artist, from The Heart of the Antarctic, Vol. I, by E. H. Shackleton, C.V.O. [William Heinemann, London, 1909]

The Nimrod Returns, c1908

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print that captures the spirit of exploration and adventure in the early 20th century. Painted by George Marston, the expedition artist, this artwork depicts Anglo-Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton's second Antarctic expedition from 1907 to 1909. Shackleton and his team achieved an incredible feat during this expedition by reaching the Farthest South latitude at 88° S, coming within a mere 97 geographical miles of the elusive South Pole. This remarkable accomplishment marked the largest advance towards the pole in exploration history at that time. The painting also showcases Mount Erebus, one of Antarctica's most active volcanoes, which members of Shackleton's team successfully climbed. The vibrant colors used by Marston bring to life both the icy landscape and the sailing ship Nimrod amidst pack ice. Ernest Shackleton was knighted for his extraordinary achievements on this expedition by King Edward VII. Sadly, he met his untimely demise during his third and final oceanographic journey to sub-Antarctic regions at only 47 years old. This print serves as a testament to Shackleton's indomitable spirit and unwavering determination in pushing boundaries and exploring uncharted territories. It stands as a tribute not only to him but also to all those who have dedicated their lives to unraveling nature's mysteries in some of Earth's harshest environments.
