Pierre and Marie Curie, French physicists, 1906
Pierre and Marie Curie, French physicists, 1906. Polish-born Marie Curie and her husband Pierre continued the work on radioactivity started by Henri Becquerel. In 1898, they discovered two new elements, polonium and radium. Marie did most of the work of producing these elements, and to this day her notebooks are still too radioactive to use. She went on to become the first woman to be awarded a doctorate in France, and continued her work after Pierres death in 1906. In 1903 they shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with Becquerel. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the renowned French physicists, Pierre and Marie Curie, in 1906. Hailing from Poland, Marie Curie and her husband Pierre embarked on groundbreaking research in radioactivity following Henri Becquerel's initial discoveries. In their quest for knowledge, they made a monumental breakthrough in 1898 by uncovering two new elements: polonium and radium. It was Marie who dedicated herself to producing these elements, but her notebooks remain too radioactive even today. Marie Curie's contributions extended far beyond scientific achievements. She shattered societal barriers as the first woman to receive a doctorate in France while persisting with her work after Pierre's untimely death that same year. The couple's remarkable efforts were recognized when they shared the Nobel Prize for Physics alongside Becquerel in 1903. The photograph showcases an intimate moment between this extraordinary duo against the backdrop of a charming building. Marie is elegantly dressed as she stands beside her beloved husband Pierre, both exuding an air of determination and intellect. Their bicycles lean against the wall nearby, symbolizing their progressive mindset and love for exploration. This image serves as a testament to the enduring legacy of these trailblazing scientists whose groundbreaking discoveries continue to shape our understanding of physics and chemistry today.
