Ponies on the March, 1911, (1913). Artist: Herbert Ponting

Ponies on the March, 1911, (1913). The final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) left London on 1 June 1910 bound for the South Pole. The Terra Nova Expedition, officially the British Antarctic Expedition (1910-1913), included a geologist, a zoologist, a surgeon, a photographer, an engineer, a ski expert, a meteorologist and a physicist among others. Scott wished to continue the scientific work that he had begun when leading the Discovery Expedition to the Antarctic in 1901-04. He also wanted to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. Scott, accompanied by Dr Edward Wilson, Captain Lawrence Oates, Lieutenant Henry Bowers and Petty Officer Edgar Evans, reached the Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find that the Norwegian expedition under Amundsen had beaten them to their objective by a month. Delayed by blizzards, and running out of supplies, Scott and the remainder of his team died at the end of March. Their bodies and diaries were found eight months later. Ponies on the March, 1911

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print captured by Herbert Ponting during the final expedition of British Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott. In this poignant image, we witness the Terra Nova Expedition team embarking on their arduous journey towards the South Pole in June 1910. Led by Scott, this diverse group of explorers consisted of scientists and specialists from various fields who aimed to continue their scientific research while also striving to be the first to reach the geographic South Pole. The photograph showcases ponies being led through vast icy landscapes, symbolizing both hope and determination amidst an unforgiving environment. However, fate had other plans for Scott and his team. Despite enduring treacherous blizzards and dwindling supplies, they arrived at the South Pole on January 17th, 1912—only to discover that Norwegian explorer Amundsen had already beaten them there a month earlier. Tragically, faced with insurmountable challenges on their return journey, Scott and his companions perished in late March. This haunting image serves as a reminder of their courageous spirit and unwavering pursuit of knowledge against all odds. It encapsulates both the triumphs and tragedies experienced during this historic expedition—a testament to human resilience in one of Earth's harshest environments. Preserved within "Scott's Last Expedition". Volume I (Smith Elder & Co. , London), this photograph immortalizes not only an extraordinary moment but also pays homage to those who sacrificed everything for exploration and discovery in Antarctica over a century ago.
