Roman hypocaust, Salamis, North Cyprus

Roman hypocaust, Salamis, North Cyprus. Archaeologists have found remains at Salamis dating back to the 11th century BC. Evidence of Phoenician and Assyrian settlement has been found and it later became the capital of a Greek city-state. In Roman times Salamis was an important city and most of the ruins that can be seen today date from the Roman period. Hypocausts such as this were the system of central heating devised by the Romans. Salamis was badly damaged by earthquakes in the 4th century and was eventually abandoned after it was sacked in the 649 during the Arab invasion of Cyprus

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the remarkable Roman hypocaust in Salamis, North Cyprus. Steeped in history, Salamis boasts a rich archaeological heritage dating back to the 11th century BC. The remains discovered here provide evidence of Phoenician and Assyrian settlements before it became a thriving Greek city-state. During Roman times, Salamis flourished as an important city, with most of the ruins we see today originating from this period. The image captures one of the ingenious inventions of ancient Rome - the hypocaust system. This advanced central heating technology revolutionized comfort during that era. As you gaze at this well-preserved hypocaust structure, imagine how it once efficiently circulated warm air beneath floors and through walls to heat entire buildings. However, despite its glorious past, Salamis faced numerous challenges throughout history. Devastating earthquakes in the 4th century caused significant damage to this once-thriving city. Its decline continued when it fell victim to plundering during the Arab invasion of Cyprus in 649 AD. Today, these abandoned ruins stand as a testament to human ingenuity and resilience across centuries. They offer visitors a glimpse into ancient civilizations while reminding us of our shared cultural heritage. Let this evocative photograph transport you back in time as you explore the fascinating remnants of Salamis' illustrious past under clear Cypriot skies.
