Socrates, Greek philosopher. Roman copy of a lost Greek original of c370 BC

Socrates, Greek philosopher. Roman copy of a lost Greek original of c370 BC. Socrates (469-399 BC) is considered to be the intellectual father of modern Western philosophy. His method of enquiry was to enter into a penetrating discussion with his companions, questioning the nature of knowledge itself in pursuit of absolute truths. Socrates himself wrote nothing, but versions of his conversations are recorded in the written works of his pupils Plato and Xenophon. Socrates pursuit of true knowledge brought him into conflict with the piety laws of his native Athens, where his eventual prosecution led to enforced suicide

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a Roman copy of a lost Greek original, depicting the renowned philosopher Socrates. Believed to have been created around 370 BC, this image offers a glimpse into the intellectual father of modern Western philosophy. Socrates' method of inquiry involved engaging in deep discussions with his companions, delving into the very nature of knowledge itself in search of absolute truths. Although he never wrote anything himself, versions of his conversations were recorded by his pupils Plato and Xenophon. However, it was Socrates' relentless pursuit of true knowledge that ultimately brought him into conflict with the piety laws in Athens, leading to his prosecution and enforced suicide. The sculpture's intricate details capture both the wisdom and intensity that defined Socrates as a philosopher. The marble bust portrays his face and body with remarkable precision, reflecting the artistry prevalent during ancient Greece. As we gaze upon this artifact from centuries past, we are reminded not only of Socrates' profound impact on philosophy but also how he challenged societal norms for the sake of truth. This print serves as an enduring tribute to one man's unwavering commitment to seeking enlightenment amidst adversity.
