EDITORS COMMENTS
The steam yacht Schievan gracefully glides through the waters in this print captured in 1911. Created by Kirk & Sons of Cowes, the image showcases the elegance and grandeur of this magnificent vessel. Originally named Rosebelle, Schievan was meticulously built by Ramage & Ferguson at Leith in 1897 for Mr Theodore Pim, a distinguished figure as the Commodore of the Royal Thames Yacht Club. Throughout her storied history, Schievan played significant roles during both World Wars when she was requisitioned for service. However, her fate took a tragic turn when she fell victim to a torpedo fired by the German submarine U374 in the treacherous Straits of Gibraltar. This photograph not only captures a moment frozen in time but also serves as a testament to the resilience and endurance of seafaring vessels like Schievan. The monochrome composition adds an air of nostalgia and highlights every intricate detail from bow to stern. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece of maritime heritage, we are transported back to an era where steam yachts ruled the seas with their majestic presence. It is a reminder that even though time may have claimed some ships like Schievan, their legacy continues to inspire awe and admiration.
