EDITORS COMMENTS
This vibrant lithograph print from 1871 captures the essence of Sir John Pender, a prominent British pioneer in submarine telegraphy. Created by Coide and featured in Vanity Fair, this caricature showcases Pender's influential role in revolutionizing communications during the 19th century. Pender's remarkable career began when he joined the Atlantic Telegraph Company as a director in 1852. Recognizing the immense potential of undersea cables, he went on to establish the Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company (Telcon) in 1864. As an MP for Totnes, Devon, and co-founder of the Anglo-American Telegraph Company, Pender played a crucial part in laying new transatlantic cables. Not content with his achievements thus far, Pender founded the British Indian Submarine Telegraph Company which successfully laid an all-undersea cable to India by 1869. In addition to these accomplishments, he formed the Eastern Telegraph Company in 1872 and served as its chairman until his passing. In this portrait-like depiction, we see Pender standing confidently with one hand on his hip—a posture that exudes authority and determination. His Scottish heritage is evident through his attire and short stature. The artist skillfully captures both Pender's physical appearance and political influence within Victorian society. This print serves as a testament to Sir John Pender's significant contributions to telecommunications history while also showcasing Coide's artistic talent for creating vivid caricatures that bring historical figures to life.
