EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic White Star Lines steamer Oceanic, a true icon of maritime history. Built in 1870 by Harland and Wolff at Belfast, this remarkable vessel was the very first liner constructed for the renowned White Star Line. Combining steam power with sail, the Oceanic boasted an impressive crew of 143 and had accommodations for 166 first class passengers as well as 1000 third class passengers. On her maiden voyage on March 2nd, 1871, she embarked on a transatlantic journey between Liverpool and New York that would become her regular route until March 1875. However, her legacy did not end there. Following this period, she was chartered to the Occidental and Oriental Steamship Company where she sailed between San Francisco, Yokohama, and Hong Kong. The image captures the grandeur of this Victorian-era marvel against a backdrop of vast ocean waves. The intricate detailing in this engraving transports us back to a time when steamships ruled the seas and travel across continents became more accessible than ever before. As we gaze upon this monochrome masterpiece from Ann Ronan Pictures' collection, we are reminded of how transportation has evolved over time while appreciating the significance of these historic vessels that paved the way for modern-day cruise liners. This print serves as both a testament to human ingenuity in engineering and an homage to an era defined by exploration and adventure on waterways around the globe.
