Winter Day, 1784. Creator: Maruyama Okyo (Japanese, 1733-1795)

Winter Day, 1784. Okyo painted these panoramas in the summer of 1784. Regarded as Kyotos most important painting teacher and accomplished artist, he had studied Western painting techniques, " realistic" sketching from nature, and traditional Japanese style painting (yamato-e). The naturalistic quality of these scenes results from a blend of detailed observation of nature and a remote, even detached regard for mans place in the world

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Winter Day, 1784" takes us back in time to the Edo period in Japan. Created by Maruyama Okyo, a highly esteemed artist and painting teacher in Kyoto, this piece showcases his mastery of both Western and traditional Japanese painting techniques. Okyo's panoramic depiction of winter scenery is nothing short of breathtaking. The attention to detail and realistic sketching from nature give these scenes a naturalistic quality that transports viewers into the serene world he has created. As we gaze upon this six-panel folding screen, we can almost feel the chill in the air and hear the soft crunch of snow beneath our feet. What sets Okyo's work apart is his detached regard for man's place in the world. While humans are absent from this particular scene, their presence is implied through carefully placed structures amidst untouched nature. This juxtaposition reminds us of our smallness within the grandeur of nature itself. The use of silver on paper adds an ethereal touch to this artwork, enhancing its overall beauty and elegance. It serves as a testament to Okyo's skillful craftsmanship and dedication to his craft. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this print captures not only a moment frozen in time but also represents an important era in Japanese art history. It stands as a reminder of Maruyama Okyo's significant contributions to both Eastern and Western artistic traditions.
