Graythorp, Hartlepool. The bracing unit for a flotation tank being delivered by road to Graythorp.
In the early 1970s Laing Pipelines Offshore constructed the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the site of the old William Gray Shipyard. The company created a dry dock which was used for the construction of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for the BP North Sea Oil Project. By 1972, one thousand men were working on site to build a tubular structure which would support a drilling rig in the North Sea destined for the Forties Oilfield

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in the history of Graythorp, Hartlepool. In the early 1970s, Laing Pipelines Offshore undertook an ambitious project to construct the Graythorp fabrication yard and dry dock on the grounds of the old William Gray Shipyard. The image showcases a remarkable sight - a massive bracing unit for a flotation tank being transported by road to its destination at Graythorp. The construction of this dry dock was no ordinary feat; it played a crucial role in supporting the development of fixed platform North Sea drilling rigs for BP's monumental North Sea Oil Project. With one thousand dedicated workers laboring tirelessly on site, they aimed to build a tubular structure that would eventually serve as support for a drilling rig destined for the Forties Oilfield. In this particular snapshot, we witness an imposing lorry named Challenger from Scammell hauling this colossal load through the streets. The sheer scale and weight of this transportation task is awe-inspiring, showcasing both engineering prowess and logistical expertise. As we delve into our past through images like these, we gain insight into how industries evolved and shaped communities. This photograph serves as a testament to human ingenuity and determination during an era when offshore oil exploration was revolutionizing global energy production.
