This print showcases the intricate etching and engraving of "Aeneas Mercury 1654". The fifth state of this artwork, reduced in plate size, was published between 1697 and 1698. Measuring approximately 10 1/4 by 7 11/16 inches (26 by 195 cm), this print is a true testament to the skillful craftsmanship of Franz Cleyn, a German artist born in Rostock in 1582. The image depicts a pivotal moment from Virgil's epic poem, the Aeneid. In the square of Carthage, we witness Mercury approaching through the air to deliver an urgent warning to Aeneas. Ascanius, Aeneas' son and heir apparent, stands beside him as a middle-aged man resembling a stone mason works diligently in the center foreground. Other workmen can be seen shoveling stones or carrying heavy blocks on their shoulders towards left buildings. In the background looms an impressive statue of Diana nestled within its niche. The coat of arms displayed at the center adds further intrigue to this visually stunning composition. This particular edition boasts thirty illustrations etched by Hollar that beautifully capture key moments from Virgil's masterpiece.
