1431 1475 1492 1503 1507 Alexander Borgia Callixtus Cesare Nephew Pope Aisa

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking image captures the powerful and complex relationship between Pope Alexander VI, born Rodrigo Borgia in 1431, and his nephew Cesare Borgia, born in 1475. The two men are depicted in formal attire, with Alexander VI seated on his papal throne and Cesare standing before him, both exuding an air of authority and determination. Alexander VI, a Spanish cardinal, was elected Pope in 1492, becoming the first Spanish and the first Borgia Pope. His papacy was marked by nepotism, political maneuvering, and scandal. He is infamous for his many extramarital affairs and the birth of several illegitimate children, including Cesare. Cesare Borgia, the eldest of these children, was a military commander and political figure in his own right. He was a key player in his father's political schemes and helped expand the Papal States through military conquests. Cesare's ruthless tactics and ambition earned him both admiration and fear. Despite their close relationship, the bond between Alexander VI and Cesare was not without tension. In 1503, Cesare was exiled from Rome after a power struggle with other factions within the Church. He was eventually pardoned and returned to the Papal States, but he was assassinated in 1507. This photograph, taken from a print by Mary Evans Prints Online, offers a glimpse into the complex and tumultuous world of the Borgia family during the Italian Renaissance. The image underscores the intricate web of power, politics, and family dynamics that characterized this period in European history.
