1456 1485 Anne Nevill Neville Warwick

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative portrait, Anne Neville, the enigmatic Queen of England, is depicted in regal splendor. Born in 1456 as the daughter of the powerful Earl of Warwick, Richard Neville, Anne's life was marked by political intrigue and marital alliances that shaped the course of English history. Anne's first marriage, at the tender age of 14, was to the future King Edward IV, who ruled England from 1461 to 1470 and 1471 to 1483. Their union produced two sons, Edward V and Richard of Shrewsbury, who were declared kings after Edward IV's death in 1483. However, their reign was short-lived as their uncle, Richard III, seized the throne, imprisoning and possibly murdering the young princes in the Tower of London. Anne's second marriage, in 1472, was to Richard III himself, who had been her brother-in-law and the protector of her sons during Edward IV's second reign. This union proved to be a fateful one, as Anne became Richard's queen and bore him two daughters, Elizabeth of York and Cecily of York. Anne's life was cut tragically short when she died in 1485, likely due to complications from childbirth. Her death marked the end of the House of York's rule, as Henry Tudor, the future Henry VII, claimed the throne and began the Tudor dynasty. This hauntingly beautiful portrait of Anne Neville, painted in the late 15th or early 16th century, captures the essence of a woman whose life was defined by political turmoil and royal intrigue. Her striking features, regal bearing, and enigmatic expression have captivated historians and artists for centuries, making her a fascinating figure in English history.
