Puck

EDITORS COMMENTS
This charming illustration from the June 5, 1907 issue of Puck magazine depicts Charles W. Fairbanks, the 25th Vice President of the United States, transformed into a cuddly teddy bear. The cartoon, titled "Charliebear," was created by an unknown artist for the satirical weekly publication. At the time, the image of a teddy bear was a popular cultural phenomenon. The term "teddy bear" had only recently been coined after President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear during a hunting trip in Mississippi in 1902. The incident inspired a cartoon in the New York Political Cartoonist, which depicted Roosevelt sitting in a tree, refusing to shoot a small bear cub. The cartoon was later picked up by Clarence Brown, a Brooklyn shopkeeper, who began selling stuffed bears named "Teddy's Bear" in his store. The "Charliebear" illustration in Puck magazine plays on this cultural trend by anthropomorphizing Fairbanks as a teddy bear. The Vice President is depicted sitting in a tree, holding a cane and wearing a top hat, with a mischievous grin on his face. The caption below reads, "Charliebear Refuses to Shoot," a playful reference to Roosevelt's famous hunting incident. The use of a teddy bear to satirize Fairbanks is a clever way to poke fun at the political landscape of the time. Puck magazine was known for its biting political commentary and often used cartoons and illustrations to criticize public figures and current events. The "Charliebear" image is a testament to the power of satire and the enduring appeal of the teddy bear as a cultural icon.
