This print depicts Diego de Almagro, a prominent Spanish conquistador who played a significant role in the conquest of Peru in the early 16th century. Born in Jerez de los Caballeros, Extremadura, Spain, in 1475, Almagro was a fierce and ambitious leader who, like his rival Francisco Pizarro, sought wealth and glory in the New World. Almagro's expedition to South America began in 1514, when he joined an expedition led by Pánfilo de Narváez to explore the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. However, the expedition was a disaster, and Almagro was among the few survivors who made it back to Spain. Undeterred, he returned to the Americas in 1524, this time leading his own expedition to Peru. Almagro's forces arrived in Peru in 1532, just as Pizarro was preparing to attack the Inca capital of Cajamarca. Despite their rivalry, Almagro initially allied himself with Pizarro, but their relationship soon soured. In 1535, Almagro led a rebellion against Pizarro, which resulted in a brutal civil war.
