EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph marks the finish of the Thousand Miles Trial in 1900, an epic motoring event that took place from May 1st to May 12th. The image was captured in Whitehall, London, as the first cars crossed the finish line, marking the completion of a grueling 1,108-mile journey. Leading the pack is the 12 h.p. Panhard, skillfully driven by the renowned British motorist, Charles Rolls, who is seen seated at the wheel. The vehicle behind is the first Napier, proudly owned by Edward Kennard. These primitive, early cars, still in their infancy, were put to the test on a route that took them from Hyde Park Corner to Whitehall, traversing cities such as Bristol, Birmingham, Kendal, Carlisle, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield, and Nottingham. The Thousand Miles Trial was a significant milestone in the history of motoring, pushing the boundaries of these horseless carriages and showcasing their potential as a viable alternative to traditional horse-drawn carriages. The trial brought together a community of pioneering motorists, who, despite the challenges they faced, embraced the spirit of innovation and adventure. This photograph is a testament to the determination and resilience of the early motorists, who, with their primitive vehicles, dared to challenge the status quo and paved the way for the automotive revolution. The Thousand Miles Trial of 1900 stands as a symbol of the early days of motoring, a time when the world was on the cusp of a technological transformation that would forever change the way we travel.
