EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph illustration showcases the enigmatic Ichthyosaurus communis, an extinct nektonic carnivore that once thrived in the Jurassic seas. The Ichthyosaurus communis, also known as the common ichthyosaur, was a remarkable creature with a streamlined body adapted for life in the open ocean. Its elongated, torpedo-shaped body was covered in smooth, fish-like scales, while its powerful flippers propelled it through the water with incredible agility. The Ichthyosaurus communis was a top predator in its aquatic environment, feeding on a variety of prey including ammonites, belemnites, and fish. Its large, conical teeth were perfectly suited for seizing and crushing the hard shells of its prey. This stunning illustration was created by the renowned German natural history artist F. John for the publication "Tiere der Urwelt" or "Animals of the Prehistoric World," published in Hamburg in 1910. The chromolithograph process used multiple lithographic stones, each coated with a different color, to create a richly detailed and vibrant image. This technique allowed for a level of detail and accuracy that was unmatched by other printing methods of the time. The Ichthyosaurus communis is a fascinating reminder of the diverse and fascinating creatures that once inhabited our planet. Its extinction, along with that of other prehistoric marine reptiles, marks the end of the Mesozoic Era and the beginning of the Cenozoic Era, some 66 million years ago. Today, this iconic creature continues to captivate the imaginations of scientists, artists, and the public alike, as we continue to uncover new insights into the history of life on Earth.
