1588 1643 Churchman Colchester Shute Theologian Josias
EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph print captures the solemn and thoughtful visage of Josias Shute (1588-1643), a prominent churchman and theologian from Colchester during the tumultuous 17th century in England. Shute's serious expression and furrowed brow suggest a deep contemplation of the theological issues that consumed his life. Born in Colchester, Essex, Shute was educated at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and ordained as a priest in the Church of England in 1613. He quickly rose through the ranks of the clergy, becoming a prebendary of St. Paul's Cathedral in London in 1618. However, Shute's religious beliefs were not in line with the increasingly Puritanical leanings of the English Church. During the reign of King Charles I, Shute became a vocal critic of the king's attempts to impose a more traditional, high-church form of worship on the English people. He was a leading figure in the movement for religious reform and was a key figure in the establishment of the Westminster Assembly, which sought to reform the Church of England. Despite his opposition to the king, Shute remained a loyal subject of England and refused to join the rebellion against Charles I. However, his refusal to compromise on his religious beliefs led to his imprisonment in the Tower of London in 1642. He was eventually released, but he died shortly thereafter, likely from the effects of his imprisonment. Shute's legacy as a churchman and theologian is significant. He was a prolific writer and published numerous works on theology, including a commentary on the Book of Revelation and a defense of the Anglican liturgy. His writings continue to be studied by scholars of English Reformation history and theology.
