1897 Australian Aviator Found Kingsford Lost Timor 1935 Smith

EDITORS COMMENTS
This color print depicts the legendary Australian aviator, Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith, standing proudly next to his historic aircraft, the Southern Cross, in the golden light of the Australian sun. Born on September 9, 1897, in Mitchell, New South Wales, Kingsford-Smith is renowned for his pioneering aviation achievements, including the first trans-Pacific flight from California to Australia in 1928, and the first east-to-west trans-Australian flight in 1934. However, this photograph was taken before his most famous and tragic flight. In 1935, Kingsford-Smith embarked on an ambitious attempt to fly from Darwin, Australia, to Timor, Indonesia, and then on to Singapore and home. The Southern Cross, a twin-engine Fokker Trimotor, was his trusted companion on many of his record-breaking flights. On October 8, 1935, as Kingsford-Smith and his crew, navigator James Warner, and engineer Tom Campbell Black, were flying over the Timor Sea, they disappeared without a trace. Despite extensive search efforts, they were never found. The loss of Kingsford-Smith and his crew was a devastating blow to the Australian people, who mourned the loss of their national hero. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the bravery and determination of Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith and his crew, who pushed the boundaries of aviation and left an indelible mark on Australian history. The Southern Cross, with its distinctive red cross emblazoned on its wings, stands as a symbol of their legacy and the spirit of adventure that continues to inspire generations.
