EDITORS COMMENTS
In the heart of the First World War, two women, Mrs Lawrence and Mrs Barry Mason, dedicated their time and efforts to an unusual yet essential cause: carbonising military garments to protect troops from vermin. During the war, the lack of proper hygiene facilities and the prolonged use of uniforms led to a significant infestation of lice and other pests in soldiers' clothing. In response, Mrs Lawrence and Mrs Mason established a workroom where they carried out the carbonisation process, which involved heating uniforms in a mangle filled with carbon to kill the vermin and disinfect the clothing. The Tatler magazine captured this remarkable scene in 1918, featuring a photograph of the women at work in their humble yet vital workspace. At the time, they were actively raising funds to continue their life-saving work, which proved to be a crucial contribution to the soldiers' morale and overall health during the war. The carbonisation process not only eliminated vermin but also helped prevent the spread of diseases such as typhus and trench fever. This photograph is a testament to the resilience and ingenuity of women during the First World War, who went above and beyond to support the troops in any way they could. Mrs Lawrence and Mrs Mason's workrooms were a beacon of hope for soldiers, providing them with cleaner, healthier uniforms and a sense of comfort amidst the chaos and hardships of the war. This historical image offers a unique glimpse into the sacrifices and innovations that defined the war effort and the spirit of unity and determination that carried the world through one of its darkest periods.
