EDITORS COMMENTS
Mrs W.B. Leeds, or Nancy Leeds, born Nonnie May Stewart, graced the cover of the prestigious Tatler magazine in 1917, a testament to her status as one of the most prominent and beautiful members of New York Society at the time. The photograph captures Nancy in all her elegance, adorned with a stunning tiara and an air of refinement. This was the year she had made headlines once again by taking possession of Kenwood House in Hampstead, a grand estate that added to her already impressive list of possessions. Beyond her social standing and wealth, Nancy was deeply engaged in war work, demonstrating her compassion and generosity by subscribing a million pounds sterling to the last war loan. Her philanthropic efforts were not new; she had previously married into royalty when she wed Prince Christopher of Greece on 1 January 1920, after a six-year engagement. Her substantial fortune helped the Greek royal family during a financially challenging period in their history. Despite her contributions to both society and the war effort, Nancy's life was tragically cut short when she succumbed to cancer just three years after her marriage. This poignant portrait serves as a reminder of her enduring beauty, wealth, and generosity, as well as the historical significance of her place in society during a pivotal moment in history.
