EDITORS COMMENTS
this hand-colored copperplate engraving depicts three Ancient Germanic deities: Irmensula, Crodo, and Prono. Irmensula, the god of the Saxons and Westphalians, is shown in medieval armor, holding a shield and a sword. The Obotrites and other Germanic tribes worshipped Irmensula as a protector of their lands and a god of war. Next to Irmensula stands Crodo, also known as Cronus or Saturn, depicted with a spear and shield. In Germanic mythology, Crodo was the god of the harvest, time, and death. He was often depicted as a wise and powerful king, wearing a crown and holding an ax. The Vandals and other Germanic tribes worshipped Crodo as a deity of agriculture and the cycle of life and death. The third deity in this engraving is Prono, also known as Brennus, the god of the Germans. He is shown holding a wheel and a fish. Prono was the god of the sun, fire, and water, and was often depicted as a god of fertility and prosperity. The Moravians and other Germanic tribes worshipped Prono as a protector of their lands and a god of abundance. This engraving is taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1844. The detailed and colorful illustration offers a glimpse into the rich and complex mythology of the Ancient Germanic peoples, showcasing their deities and their cultural traditions. The engraving is a valuable historical and artistic record of the past, providing insights into the beliefs and practices of the Germanic tribes of Europe.
