EDITORS COMMENTS
This collection of portraits, hand-colored from copperplate engravings, offers a glimpse into the rich tapestry of India's diverse cultural landscape during the 19th century. The portraits depict individuals representing various Indian castes, each embodying the unique traditions and customs of their respective social groups. In the first two portraits, we encounter Brahmins, the priestly class, whose distinguished appearance is marked by their sacred thread and shaved head. The next two portraits represent the Kshatriyas or Khatris, the warrior and ruling class, whose regal bearing and martial attire reflect their noble lineage. The following pair of portraits showcase members of the Punjabi mercantile caste, whose prosperous trade and commerce are evident in their elegant clothing and adornments. The subsequent two portraits depict Vaisyas, the artisan and agricultural caste, whose skills and labor were essential to the functioning of Indian society. The penultimate pair of portraits feature Hindus of upper India, whose refined appearance and sophisticated attire reflect their elevated social status. Lastly, we encounter the Mughals, the Muslim rulers of India, whose regal attire, turbaned heads, and majestic beards evoke the grandeur of their imperial legacy. These stunning portraits, taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World," offer a fascinating glimpse into the diverse and complex social fabric of India during the 19th century. The intricate hand-coloring and meticulous copperplate engraving techniques employed by Andrea Bernieri and Francois Solvyns further enhance the beauty and allure of these captivating images.
