EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving depicts the Ruins of the Inca Palace (tambo) at Callo, located on the shores of Lake Cotopaxi in Ecuador. The Inca Empire, which existed from approximately 1200 to 1533 AD, was the largest state in pre-Columbian America and spanned present-day Peru, Bolivia, and parts of Chile, Argentina, and Ecuador. The Inca people were known for their advanced civilization, with impressive architectural achievements, complex administrative systems, and intricate social structures. The term "tambo" referred to an Inca roadside inn or lodge, providing rest and sustenance for travelers and messengers on the extensive Inca road network. The ruins at Callo are believed to have served as an important tambo, given their strategic location near Lake Cotopaxi and the Inca Royal Road. The engraving, created by Nasi for Giulio Ferrrario's "Costumes Antique and Modern of All Peoples" (Il Costume Antico e Moderno di Tutti i Popoli), published in Florence in 1842, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the grandeur and sophistication of Inca architecture. The ruins, with their intricate stonework and terraced platforms, evoke a sense of mystery and wonder, inviting us to explore the rich history and cultural heritage of the Inca Empire.
