EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a group of dedicated members of the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC) during World War I, as they work diligently in a clothing store to pack uniforms for recruits. The WAAC was an essential organization that played a significant role in supporting the war effort from the home front. Established in December 1914, this all-female volunteer force provided vital services to the British military, including cooking, cleaning, driving ambulances, and, as seen in this image, distributing uniforms to new recruits. The women in the photograph are carefully balancing uniforms into large hessian bags, which will later be tied securely and transported to military bases. Their determined expressions and focused demeanor convey the sense of urgency and importance of their work. The uniforms, neatly folded and arranged on the table, are ready to be distributed to the soldiers who will soon be heading to the front lines. This image offers a poignant reminder of the critical role that women played during the First World War, as they stepped up to support their country in various ways, often in challenging and unfamiliar circumstances. The Women's Auxiliary Army Corps, and the countless other women who served in various capacities, made invaluable contributions to the war effort and left a lasting impact on the history of military service.
