EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, the second Hawker Siddeley Andover C1, registration XS594, is seen in close proximity to the Avro 780 prototype, G-ARRV, at an undisclosed airfield. The Andover C1, a military transport aircraft, is a development of the Andover C Mk.1, which was initially designed and manufactured by Avro as the Type 748. The Hawker Siddeley division of the British aircraft manufacturing conglomerate, Hawker Siddeley Aviation, took over the production and further evolved the design, resulting in the Andover C1. The Avro 780 prototype, G-ARRV, is a significant aircraft in its own right. It is a conversion of the original Avro 748 prototype, G-APZV, which was the first flight-test aircraft for the Type 748. The Avro 780 was an attempt to extend the capabilities of the Type 748 by adding a longer fuselage and more powerful engines. However, the project was ultimately abandoned due to various issues, and the prototype was converted back to its original configuration as G-ARRV. The image presents a fascinating juxtaposition of these two aircraft, both with a rich history in the annals of aviation. The Andover C1, with its military livery and robust design, stands tall and proud, while the Avro 780 prototype, with its elongated fuselage and distinctive markings, offers a glimpse into what could have been. Together, they represent the ingenuity, innovation, and determination of the engineers and designers who worked tirelessly to push the boundaries of aviation technology.
