EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we witness the powerful presence of the Mighty Riddles Standard class 9F No. 92203 as it pulls the last steam-hauled iron ore train from Bidston Docks in Birkenhead to John SummerOs Steelworks at Shotton, Deeside. The year is 1967, and Sir Richard Summers stands proudly on the footplate of this magnificent locomotive. As a symbol of an era coming to an end, this historic moment was captured by artist David Shepherd who later acquired and named the locomotive Black Prince. Its new home became the Gloucester-Warwickshire Railway near Cheltenham. The image exudes nostalgia for a time when steam engines were not just modes of transport but icons that connected communities and fueled industrial growth. It represents a farewell to an age where coal-fired giants ruled the rails with their rhythmic chugging and billowing smoke. Sir Richards Summers takes center stage in this photograph, embodying both pride and melancholy as he drives this final journey from Bilston Docks to John Summers steelworks. His role marks him as one of those entrusted with preserving history while embracing progress. This evocative snapshot transports us back to a bygone era filled with adventure and romance; it reminds us that even machines can hold sentimental value beyond their practical use.
