This print captures the remarkable bravery and dedication of Belgian Boy Scouts during the early stages of World War I. In a time when telegrams and ordinary messengers were deemed too risky for sensitive messages, these young scouts stepped up to fulfill an essential role. Some even ventured into France to gather the harvest while their male counterparts fought on the front lines. Equipped with pistols due to their proximity to danger, one particular scout named Joseph Louis Leyssen became renowned at the start of the war. His heroic act involved capturing two German spies disguised as priests near Liege, earning him recognition and trust among his superiors. Consequently, Leyssen was granted permission to assist directly on the front line. The photograph showcases Leyssen after being decorated for his fifth engagement with enemy forces in September 1914. The determination etched on his face reflects not only his personal courage but also symbolizes the resilience displayed by countless individuals during this tumultuous period in history.
