EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the historic and daring "Dam Busters" raid conducted by the Royal Air Force No. 617 Squadron during World War II. The image showcases the aftermath of this audacious operation, which targeted the Mohne, Eder, and Sorpe Dams in Germany's Ruhr Valley on May 16th-17th, 1943. Led by visionary engineer Barnes Wallis, the squadron utilized a groundbreaking invention known as the "bouncing bomb". This specially developed weapon was designed to skip across water before detonating against dam walls with devastating effect. The result was catastrophic flooding that wreaked havoc upon both the Ruhr valley and villages in the Eder valley. In this particular photograph taken on May 17th, 1943 at Froendenberg-Boesperd – located thirteen miles from Moehne Dam – we witness firsthand evidence of destruction caused by these strategic air raids. The aerial view reveals extensive damage inflicted upon buildings and infrastructure due to massive flooding unleashed by breached dams. This powerful visual serves as a poignant reminder of not only the incredible bravery exhibited by RAF pilots but also their pivotal role in shaping history during World War II. As we reflect upon this momentous event captured within these frames, it is crucial to honor those who fought valiantly for freedom and remember their sacrifices for generations to come.
