Maria Teresa de Filippis pictured in her Red Maserati 250F before she puts her crash

Maria Teresa de Filippis pictured in her Red Maserati 250F before she puts her crash helmet on for the start of the BRDC International Trophy race at Silverstone. She is surrounded by photographers keen to take her picture. Maria retired after 40 laps due to a transmission problem.
Maria Teresa de Filippis (11 November 1926 - 8 January 2016) was an Italian racing driver, and the first woman to race in Formula One. She participated in five World Championship Grands Prix, debuting on 18 May 1958, but scored no championship points. Though her Formula One racing career was brief, she won races in other series and is remembered as a pioneer in the sport.
The 11th BRDC International Trophy was a 12 lap motor race, run to Formula One rules, held on 2 May 1959 at the Silverstone Circuit, England. The race was run over 50 laps of the Grand Prix circuit, and was won by Australian driver Jack Brabham in a Cooper T51.

Maria Teresa de Filippis - A Trailblazer on the Track

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this photo print, we are transported back to the historic moment when Maria Teresa de Filippis made her mark as the first woman to race in Formula One. Pictured in her vibrant Red Maserati 250F, Maria exudes confidence and determination before donning her crash helmet for the start of the BRDC International Trophy race at Silverstone. Surrounded by a swarm of eager photographers, their lenses focused on this trailblazing driver, one can feel the anticipation in the air. The year is 1959, and Maria's presence on that track challenges gender norms and breaks barriers in a male-dominated sport. Although fate had other plans for Maria that day - retiring after 40 laps due to a transmission problem - her legacy extends far beyond those few moments. Her brief Formula One career may not have yielded championship points, but she triumphed in races across various series, leaving an indelible mark as a pioneer in motorsport. This print serves as a powerful reminder of Maria Teresa de Filippis' courage and tenacity. It captures a pivotal chapter in racing history when boundaries were shattered and dreams were realized against all odds. As we gaze upon this image from Memory Lane Prints taken on May 2nd, 1959, we honor not only Maria's achievements but also celebrate every woman who has since followed in her tire tracks towards equality and success on the racetrack.
