EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures the potential impact of a total evacuation for military purposes on the tranquil South West coast area. The image showcases Strete Village in Devon, where villagers, hamlets, and farms face an uncertain future as no concrete plans for rehousing have been publicly announced. Against the backdrop of Forge Cottage's charming thatched roof, which houses an ancient blacksmiths shop, Mrs Rosa Spellar and Mrs Vera Velente are seen drawing water from the village pump while being assisted by 4-year-old Christopher Wills. The photograph serves as a reminder of the human cost of war during this turbulent period in history. It highlights how ordinary country folk like Mrs Spellar and Mrs Velente may be uprooted from their homes if an evacuation order is given. Their expressions reflect both determination and concern as they navigate through these challenging times. Taken on November 9th, 1943, amidst World War II (WWII), this image encapsulates the rural charm that could soon be disrupted by conflict. As we delve into Memory Lane Prints' collection, it becomes evident that such photographs offer us glimpses into forgotten stories and forgotten lives – reminding us to honor those who endured hardships during wartime.
