EDITORS COMMENTS
In this print from HMS Rajalyia, Royal Navy Station in Puttalam, Ceylon during the Second World War, we catch a glimpse of the lighter side of military life amidst the chaos. The focal point is an unexpected mascot - a wild donkey named "Daisey" who has been tamed and adopted by the Chance-Vought Corsair maintenance crews. Leading Seaman Robert Roe proudly poses as Daisey's owner-driver, standing beside his handcrafted truck that Daisey dutifully pulls. The crew members gather around with smiles on their faces, taking a moment to relax and enjoy each other's company. It is February 1945, and these brave men find solace in camaraderie and lightheartedness amid their demanding duties. Perched on the starboard wing of the Corsair is AM (O) Eric Hodgkinson while others like AM (A) Eric Aburn, AM (O) Frederick Spall, AM (A) Micheal Brannen, AM (E) Joseph Harvey, Able Seaman David Nicholas, and Able Seaman Wally Lane stand together in unity. This photograph captures not only the bond between servicemen but also showcases how even in times of war there can be moments of joy and connection. As they take respite from their responsibilities for just a little while longer than usual – laughter fills the air alongside Daisey's presence. Preserved through time by Memory Lane Prints' collection of historical photographs from WWII-era armed forces activities at HMS Rajalyia station; this image serves as a reminder that even amidst turmoil and conflict there are glimpses of humanity that bring us together.
