EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported back to the year 1921 in Truro, Cornwall. The image captures a significant moment in the city's history as the Mayor of Truro, N. B. Bullen, lays the foundation stone for new houses at Hendra. The foundation stone itself is embedded in the side wall of 3 Kenwyn Road, serving as a lasting testament to this pivotal event. Its inscription proudly displays the names of those involved: Mayor N. B. Bullen, Chairman of Housing Committee R. K. Worth, and City Surveyor F. A. Barnes. These houses were not just ordinary dwellings; they were erected under a government housing scheme specifically designed for workmen by the City Council. This initiative aimed to provide affordable and decent living conditions for hardworking individuals within Truro. As we examine this photograph further, we notice a sense of ceremony surrounding Mayor Bullen's actions. A crowd has gathered around him, eagerly observing his every move with anticipation and pride. The mayor stands tall wearing his mayoral chain while holding a trowel firmly in hand—a symbol of progress and growth for both Truro and its residents. This image serves as a reminder that behind every brick laid lies hope for better days ahead—days filled with warmth and comfort within these newly constructed homes that would soon become cherished havens for many families throughout Truro's vibrant community.
