Chemistry equipment, early 19th century C013 / 5271
Chemical equipment. Early 19th-century artwork depicting a variety of devices and instruments used in chemistry experiments. The two sets of apparatus at centre and bottom are used for distillation, with the retorts at left heated and the vapour condensed and collected at right. The apparatus at top also involves heating chemicals in a retort. All three set-ups have various traps set up to aid analysis of the vapours and chemicals produced. This is Plate V of a series on modern chemical apparatus published in London in 1800 for the Encyclopaedia Londinensis, or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Literature
