Crude cupping glass, 17th century C017 / 3583

Crude cupping glass dating from the seventeenth century. Cupping procedures were historically used in medicine up until the late nineteenth century. A vacuum would be created within the cupping vessel using a heated flame (dry cupping). Wet cupping involves the use of the vacuum to suck blood out of the surface of the skin through wounds created with blades or scarificators (bloodletting). It was believed that removal of excess humours (bodily fluids) was beneficial and was used to treat a wild range of ailments

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a crude cupping glass from the seventeenth century, providing a glimpse into the fascinating history of medical practices. Cupping procedures were widely employed in medicine until the late nineteenth century, serving as both a therapeutic and diagnostic tool. In this particular device, a vacuum was created within the cupping vessel by heating it with an open flame (known as dry cupping). Alternatively, wet cupping involved using the vacuum to draw blood out of superficial skin wounds made with blades or scarificators (bloodletting). The removal of excess bodily fluids, believed to be beneficial at that time, aimed to treat various ailments. The antique glass apparatus featured in this image represents an essential tool used by physicians during the seventeenth century. Its historical significance lies not only in its function but also in its association with traditional medical practices prevalent at that time. Displayed against a peach background, this photograph captures the intricate details of this 17th-century medical equipment. It serves as a reminder of how far medicine has progressed over centuries and provides insight into our ancestors' understanding and treatment of diseases.
