EDITORS COMMENTS
This black and white portrait captures the essence of Harry Bolus, a renowned South African botanist whose contributions to the field are immeasurable. With his piercing gaze and distinguished profile, Bolus exudes an air of wisdom and curiosity that is synonymous with the scientific pursuit of knowledge. Born in Nottingham, England in 1834, Bolus ventured to the Cape Colony (now South Africa) in 1850 to embark on a botanical collecting mission. After temporarily setting aside his passion for botany, he resumed his studies in 1865 and went on to establish an extensive collection of plant specimens. His dedication extended beyond mere collections as he also amassed a vast library of botanical books and magazines. Bolus' entrepreneurial success allowed him to found both the prestigious Bolus Herbarium and the Harry Bolus Professorship at what would later become known as the University of Cape Town. In recognition of his expertise, he was elected Fellow of the Linnean Society of London while serving as President of the South African Philosophical Society. This photograph serves as a timeless tribute to this influential figure who left an indelible mark on South African botany. It encapsulates not only Bolus' intellectual prowess but also his unwavering commitment towards understanding and preserving nature's wonders. As we delve into this image, we catch a glimpse into history - witnessing firsthand how one man's passion can shape our understanding of flora and contribute significantly to our natural world's legacy.
