William Harvey, English physician
William Harvey (1578-1657), English physician. Harvey is famous for his discovery that the blood and heart form part of a complete systemic circulatory system, something that had not been fully realised before. The Latin form of his name is at left, including the epithet Magnus ille (the Great). The original of this portrait is held at the National Portrait Gallery, London. It is an oil on canvas portrait dating from circa 1649, thought to be by the painter Richard Gaywood
