Kunisada (1786-1865), was in his own time was the most popular and successful print designer in Japan. This print of 1862 shows an actor Nakamura Daikich with a Shamisen is a 3-stringed lute with a resonance box covered either with cat or dog skin. and forms part of my own private collection of original woodblock prints. Kunisada was born in Edo and started out doing actor prints, the initial specialty of the Utagawa school, but eventually branched out into bijin-ga (beautiful women), and even also landscapes. During his lifetime, he produced a vast number of prints. He died in Edo, having made only one documented trip out of it in his whole life

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite artistry of Kunisada, a renowned Japanese woodblock print designer from the 19th century. The image depicts a traditional female musician, beautifully adorned in a vibrant kimono, kneeling gracefully while playing the shamisen - a three-stringed lute with a resonance box covered in either cat or dog skin. Nakamura Daikich, an esteemed actor of that era, is portrayed here with utmost skill and precision by Kunisada. This particular piece was created in 1862 and forms part of my personal collection of original woodblock prints. Kunisada's artistic journey began with actor prints but eventually expanded to include bijin-ga (depictions of beautiful women) and even landscapes. His immense popularity during his lifetime can be attributed to his prolific output; he produced an astonishing number of prints. Interestingly, this talented artist spent almost his entire life in Edo (now Tokyo), venturing out only once on record. The composition exudes an unmistakable sense of Japanese culture and tradition. From the intricate patterns on the kimono to the bamboo backdrop, every element reflects the rich heritage and urban scene prevalent during Japan's Edo period. As I gaze upon this remarkable artwork from my private collection, I am transported back in time to appreciate not just Kunisada's mastery but also the timeless beauty captured within this mesmerizing woodblock print.
