Model, Rocket, Saturn V, 1975. Creator: David P. Gianakos
Model, Rocket, Saturn V, 1975. This is a 1:34 scale model of the Saturn V and its launch tower. The Saturn V was one of several rockets developed by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for use in the Apollo program. Americas largest operational launch vehicle, a Saturn V first launched a manned Apollo spacecraft in December 1968 when the crew of Apollo 8 were placed into lunar orbit. In July 1969, the rocket sent astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edward Aldrin, Jr. of Apollo 11 to the surface of the moon, while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit. Saturn V was utilized in the remaining six Apollo missions to the moon during 1969-1972 and to launch the Skylab Orbital Workshop into Earth orbit in May 1973. David Gianakos built this model and donated it to NASM in 1975

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable piece of history - the Model Rocket Saturn V, meticulously crafted by David P. Gianakos in 1975. Standing at an impressive 1:34 scale, this model perfectly captures the grandeur and complexity of the original Saturn V rocket and its launch tower. The Saturn V was a monumental achievement for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) during the Apollo program. As America's largest operational launch vehicle, it played a pivotal role in sending astronauts to explore space and ultimately land on the moon. In December 1968, Apollo 8 became the first manned spacecraft launched into lunar orbit using a Saturn V rocket. The iconic Apollo 11 mission followed in July 1969 when Neil Armstrong and Edward Aldrin Jr. set foot on the lunar surface while Michael Collins orbited above. David Gianakos' passion for space exploration is evident in his meticulous craftsmanship of this model, which he generously donated to the National Air and Space Museum (NASM) in 1975. Constructed with wood plaster, metal base, plastic, phenolic rocket components, and even including a metal launch umbilical tower replica - every detail has been faithfully recreated. This print not only serves as a testament to human ingenuity but also pays homage to those who dared to dream beyond Earth's boundaries. It stands as an educational artifact within NASM - inspiring visitors with its historical significance and reminding us of our boundless potential for scientific discovery and exploration beyond our home planet.
