Bee pollen basket, SEM
Bee pollen basket, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The pollen basket (called the corbicula) is found on a bees hind legs. The bee moistens its fore legs with its tongue, and brushes pollen from its head, body and mouthparts towards the hind legs. The pollen is transferred to the pollen comb on the hind legs, and then compacted and transferred to the outside surface of the hind legs. There, the pollen ends up in a concavity surrounded by hairs. Honey or nectar is used to moisten the dry pollen. A single pollen grain (green) is seen here. Magnification: x200 when printed at 10 centimetres across

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a bee pollen basket, captured through a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The image reveals the fascinating process by which bees collect and transport pollen. Located on the hind legs of bees, the corbicula, or pollen basket, plays a crucial role in this process. In this mesmerizing snapshot, we witness how a bee moistens its forelegs with its tongue before brushing pollen from various parts of its body towards its hind legs. The transferred pollen is then compacted and meticulously arranged on the outside surface of these legs. Surrounding this concavity are delicate hairs that cradle and secure each precious grain. The vibrant green hue visible in this photograph represents a single pollen grain amidst an array of others. To ensure their survival and nourishment, bees use honey or nectar to moisten dry pollen grains found within their baskets. With magnification at x200 when printed at 10 centimeters across, every minute detail is brought to life in stunning clarity. This extraordinary image not only highlights the biological marvels present within nature but also serves as a testament to the vital role played by these industrious insects in plant reproduction. Captured by Science Photo Library's expert lens, this print offers an enthralling glimpse into the world of pollination while celebrating both scientific discovery and artistic expression.
