EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handfinished chromolithograph by Henry Noel Humphreys, based on an illustration by Jane Loudon from her book "Mrs. Jane Loudon's Ladies Flower Garden of Ornamental Perennials," published in London in 1849, showcases a delightful array of spring-blooming perennials. The central figure is Adonis vernalis, or Spring Adonis, with its vibrant red and yellow flowers. Surrounding it are the feathery columbines, Thalictrum aquilegifolium, with their delicate, fern-like foliage and graceful, nodding flowers in shades of pink and purple. The entire-leaved clematis, Clematis integrifolia, adds height and texture with its large, white, four-petaled blossoms. In the foreground, the common hepatica, Hepatica triloba, displays its lovely violet-blue flowers, while the American hepatica, Hepatica americana, showcases its pink and white blooms. The intricate details of each flower are beautifully rendered, making this a must-have for any botanical art enthusiast or gardening aficionado. The use of chromolithography, a popular printing technique of the time, allows for rich colors and intricate details, resulting in a stunning and accurate representation of these springtime beauties.
