EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to the early 1920s with this print from the Royal Cornwall Museum. In this snapshot, we see a group of adventurous souls taking respite on the disused trackway near Cheesewring Quarry, located amidst the rugged beauty of Bodmin Moor in Cornwall. Dressed in their finest outdoor clothing, complete with trilby hats that were all the rage during that era, these intrepid individuals are part of a walking party exploring the remnants of the Liskeard and Caradon Railway. The railway line was originally constructed in 1846 and played a vital role in transporting goods between Moorswater and South Caradon mine. As they pause along this historical route, one can only imagine their conversations filled with tales of past journeys and reminiscing about times when steam engines once chugged through these very tracks. The photographer remains unknown but has managed to capture an enchanting moment frozen in time. Sadly, by 1917, progress had caught up with this once-thriving railway line as it closed its doors for good. However, thanks to photographs like these preserved at the Royal Cornwall Museum, we can still appreciate and celebrate our rich Victorian heritage while immersing ourselves into Cornish history.
