EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the majestic Lions Mound monument in Braine-l'Alleud, Belgium, a poignant reminder of the historic battles that took place in the region during June 1815. The monument, topped by the iconic Lion of Waterloo statue, stands proudly atop a man-made hill. This hill marks the site of the Battle of Waterloo, where the French army, led by Napoleon Bonaparte, was defeated by the Seventh Coalition, led by the Duke of Wellington. Two days prior to the Battle of Waterloo, the nearby town of Quatre Bras was also the scene of fierce fighting between the French and Allied forces. The Lions Mound was constructed in 1826, and it commemorates the fallen soldiers of both battles. The Prince of Orange, who was wounded during the Battle of Quatre Bras, is said to have inspired the creation of the monument. The monument's imposing size and the stunning view it offers of the surrounding countryside make it a popular tourist destination. This photograph, taken in the 1910s, captures the monument in all its glory, with the Lion of Waterloo statue standing proudly atop the hill. The intricate details of the statue and the plinth are clearly visible, as is the sense of history and tradition that surrounds the site. The photograph also offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when Europe was shaped by the events of the Napoleonic Wars.
