EDITORS COMMENTS
Boneset, scientifically known as Eupatorium perfoliatum, is a medicinal plant that has been used for centuries to alleviate various ailments. This beautiful handcoloured lithograph by Hanhart, after a botanical illustration by David Blair, was published in Robert Bentley and Henry Trimen's "Medicinal Plants" in 1880. Boneset, also known as thoroughwort or crosswort, is native to North America and is characterized by its distinctive leaves, which appear to wrap around the stem, giving the plant its perfoliate, or "through-the-stem," arrangement. The plant produces small, white or pinkish flowers in dense clusters, which bloom from late summer to early fall. Boneset was highly valued by traditional herbalists and apothecaries for its medicinal properties. It was believed to be effective in reducing fever, relieving headaches, and easing muscle and joint pain. The plant's common name, boneset, may have originated from its use in setting broken bones, although there is no scientific evidence to support this claim. The botanical illustration and handcoloured lithograph provide a detailed and accurate record of the plant's appearance, making it an invaluable resource for both historical and scientific purposes. Today, boneset continues to be studied for its potential medicinal properties, and it is still used in some herbal remedies. However, as with any herbal remedy, it is important to consult with a healthcare professional before use.
